Each month the coaching staff at EHP selects a member that is “Better Than Yesterday!” The selected recipient is a great example of EHP’s CREDO—demonstrating compassion, honesty, resilience, perseverance, and tenacity. Samm Kouba was selected as January’s “Better Than Yesterday” recipient.

Why did you start CrossFit?
I herniated a disc in my low back in late December 2022 and subsequently met Dr. Karla in early January 2023 while trying to get my back under control. I wanted to work with someone that wasn’t going to just tell me to stop working out or lifting weights. I mentioned that maybe I would try CrossFit when I was healed. She said, “Why wait? There are things we can have you do now!” My first bootcamp was right before one of the 2023 Friday Night Lights so I stayed to watch. I was hooked.

Why do you continue CrossFit?
Hands-down 100% the people, both coaches and members. The community and atmosphere here makes it more than just the place I go to work out. Whether it’s just friendly “hellos” or three grown men screaming at you to help get you through your last rope climb… I love it all. That and Lucas’s workout playlists…

What has been your greatest achievement since starting EHP?
This year I was most proud of being selected for the 2023 Coach’s Award.  That made me feel like I am helping contribute to making this a great place to be for other athletes and coaches alike. Being a good teammate and coachable athlete is as important (if not more), to me, than any PR.

How has your life changed since joining EHP?
I am an all-around happier and healthier human being. I have met a bunch of people that I likely would never otherwise come across and it’s been an amazing last year of being here.

I participated in the Body Transformation Challenge which changed the way I think about filling my plate and fueling my body. I recommend everyone do once this if they can.

I also now have the opportunity to consistently teach a weekly yoga class and have been for the last 6 months to everyone from beginners to experienced yogis!

Anything else you would like to share about yourself, fitness journey and/or EHP.
I am looking forward to year two of being at EHP. More new skills, more kettlebells, and I can’t wait to participate in this year’s Open and Friday Night Lights!
