Each month the coaching staff at EHP selects a member that is “Better Than Yesterday!” The selected recipient is a great example of EHP’s CREDO– demonstrating compassion, honesty, resilience, perseverance, and tenacity. Duane Fierstine was selected as August’s “Better Than Yesterday” recipient.
Duane was asked a series of questions about his experience at EHP:
Why did you start CrossFit?
I saw the Game on ESPN and immediately said “I have to do this!”. I went into EHP’s lot 6 times, sat in my truck and left before I finally working up the nerve to walk in.
Why do you continue CrossFit?
CrossFit is my medicine and my church. I’m pretty open about being neurodivergent (ADHD/ADD) and without CrossFit I would likely need to be on a host of medications. I still take some for anxiety but not the heavy stimulants. The CrossFit community/people are my church. This where I gather to feed my soul w/ really good people that I aspire to be like. EVERY single person I encounter at EHP makes me a better person just by being around them.
What has been your greatest achievement since starting EHP?
Recognizing and accepting the importance of mobility but also making it a priority. It’s so incredibly important and never, ever fun or sexy. When was the last time you’ve seen a viral instagram reel of a Games athlete sitting in pigeon stretch for 2 months? 🙂 But guess what? They do….a lot.
How has your life changed since joining EHP?
Having Dr. Karla and Dr. Lizette on-site and fully invested in helping me achieve my goals through better movement and developing stability has changed EVERYTHING. I used to think that my stiffness and poor movement was just the way it was and I would just have to fight through it. Well, they’ve taught me that is most definitely NOT the case and now I believe there are no limits to what I can do.
Anything else you would like to share about yourself, fitness journey and/or EHP.
Only 185 Days, 3 hours, 42 minutes, 31 seconds until 23.1!! (from when Duane answered our questions 😊)
Do you need advice, a hype-man, a volunteer or a shoulder to cry on? Duane’s got you! Duane is a great teammate and friend to everyone who walks into our gym. He is friendly, welcoming and encouraging.
Duane, we appreciate your commitment to EHP and love your immense desire to be better than yesterday! The work you’ve put in both in and out of the gym is noticeable.
Keep crushing life!
