Each month the coaching staff at EHP selects a member that is “Better Than Yesterday!” The selected recipient is a great example of EHP’s CREDO—demonstrating compassion, honesty, resilience, perseverance, and tenacity. Josie Schahn was selected as August’s “Better Than Yesterday” recipient.
Why do you start CrossFit?
About a year ago, my friend and college roommate, Rachel Nemer, encouraged me to try out a class at EHP during the free trial week. I was very hesitant and nervous at first since I had seen a few CrossFit workouts in the past and I didn’t think I would be able to keep up. I waited until the last day of the free trial week to give it a try, and my first workout ended up being a Saturday team WOD. It was a challenging workout, but I ended up loving the team/ community environment I felt at EHP and have stuck with it ever since!
Why do you continue CrossFit?
I continue CrossFit because EHP provides me a sense of community and accountability, which were two things I really needed. I love that the workouts are something different every day and that we learn new skills often. CrossFit workouts have been really great because we are able to improve many aspects of physical fitness such as strength, cardiovascular endurance, speed, power, agility, flexibility, etc.
Greatest achievement since starting CrossFit?
I think my greatest achievement since starting at EHP has been the improvement in my mindset. After I stopped playing soccer in college, I struggled to find a form of exercise that I enjoyed and could be consistent with. Exercise became something I disliked and viewed as ‘punishment’ before I started at EHP. Being a member at EHP has helped me shift my mindset to viewing exercise as something I can do and choose to do. It has become something I genuinely enjoy and look forward to everyday. I have learned to be grateful that I am able to participate in workouts and that is why I keep coming back.
How has your life changed since joining EHP?
Since joining EHP, I have been able to establish a consistent routine that includes daily exercise. I have also learned a lot about the importance of nutrition and proper fueling. I overall feel stronger, happier, less anxious, and more energized. This has helped significantly improve my mental health, physical health, and confidence!
Anything else about yourself, fitness journey, or with EHP?
I actually tried/ had 4 different gym memberships within a two-year span before I found EHP. I had so much anxiety every time I would walk into a gym and I could not stick with anything. I love the workouts at EHP, but the people here is what makes the biggest difference to me. I am so thankful for the coaching staff and members at EHP for providing me with the sense of community I so desperately needed before I joined!
