Each month the coaching staff at EHP selects a member that is “Better Than Yesterday!” The selected recipient is a great example of EHP’s CREDO—demonstrating compassion, honesty, resilience, perseverance, and tenacity. Lisa Sethre-Hofstad was selected as April’s “Better Than Yesterday” recipient. This is the second time that Lisa has been selected for this honor!
As a second time recipient, Lisa was asked a series of questions about her continued experience at EHP:
Why did you continue CrossFit?
I had two somewhat unusual medical emergencies 19 months apart. Both were terrifying and hard. The coaches at EHP, as well as the community of athletes, rallied around me. They helped me focus on what I COULD do, even though there was a lot I could NOT do. The coaches especially nudged me forward in key ways. It would have been tempting to quit. There were no “wins” from a performance perspective coming my way. But I fought my way back from episode one, and am still fighting my way back after my fall. I have stayed because I could not have made my comebacks alone. I needed help and support and I find that every day at EHP!
What has been your greatest achievement been within the last year?
My greatest achievement in the past year has been overcoming my fears. First it was fear of pushing my HR up after my first surgery. Then, it was learning how to walk again. I am overcoming the obstacles in front of me, literally one step at a time right now. That’s what is fueling me and it has to be what I focus on regarding achievements.
How have your fitness goals changed over the years?
Fitness goals have changed from focused on numbers to focused on how I feel and making sure I push myself. I have been a “destination” person much of my life and I’m trying to become more of a “process” and “journey” person. My setbacks have shifted my focus and it’s good. I know my fitness until now has also helped me come back, especially during my rehabilitation from my ankle fracture. There may not be many PRs in my future but I will rejoice if I can just front or back squat again at all!!
Anything else you would like to share about yourself, fitness journey and/or EHP. I’m truly grateful for EHP. My PT has been amazed by my progress this spring and I know it has been partly due to the fact that I kept moving – even when I was non-weight-bearing. I am not the fastest nor the strongest in anything, but I’m stronger than I would have been without my EHP people. Hopefully a year from now, I can look back and see real progress. For now it’s one day, and step, at a time.
